I own the above car, and have not yet, after some time managed to solve it's problems.

I have had EGR Soleniod, Butterfly Solenoid and Air Flow Meter replaced in July 2009 but still the low MPG is there and I would say getting worse. If you try and start it first thing in the morning it will churn out loads of white smoke and take ages to start. Interestingly this morning I turned the ignition on, then off, then on etc about 5 times and then cranked the engine. It then started fine with no apparent white smoke. The MPG is what I really want to sort out. I have calculated manually and the computer is more or less correct.  When it does white smoke the car splutters for a while until you get the revs up.

I took it to a diesel injection specialist today and they were going to spend an hour and a half diagnosing, but in the end did none of that as they only had time to do the MOT. So I am no further forward and from what they say its a case of how long is a piece of string when it comes to finding out faults. Additionally there is a an auxilliary noise when the car is under load (a bit like tappets). My wife thought it was the cambelt but a quick check by the garage and they don't 'think' it is that. The car has only done 52K. Any thought anyone?

I would particularly be interested to hear from Canyondust and to be honest I wish there was someone like you down here in Portsmouth in the South. I would actually like to be able to leave my car with someone so they could give me a definate answer because whatever people say about MPG I do know I should be getting more than this from this engine.

I thought on the basis of the ignition key start method I used above that it could well be Glow Plugs, but the garage is pointing to a faulty injector or two as they say it is common. They want the car overnight so that they can test it and witness the smoke themselves. Not sure why they can't take my word for it but there you go. Perhaps there is a particular reason for it.

Anyway, any help appreciated. Many thanks. Sad
