I bought a new 207 GT in 2006. 18 months later it developed significant power loss problems. Most of the time it showed depollution errors on the error panel. The car  was investigated by the dealer over a period of 3 months to no avail - they couldn't locate the source of the problem despite £1,200 worth of engine management compents being fitted. The car was eventually sent back to the factory and I had a new GT with a very good trade-in to compensate me. The new GT is now 18 months old and the same thing is happening again, but this time with no error indicators showing at the time of power loss. The car is bog standard with no mods. I use 97 octane fuel most of the time. Mileage is 21,000. Below are details of current problems with dates. According to the dealer, the last car they sent back to Peugeot was mine 18 months ago. I may well also be the next!

Has anyone experienced these problems to this extent? I think this is a dangerous fault. The last time it happened I was pulling away from a roundabout - a car was approaching and I judged that I had enough time to pull out. The power failed on acceleration, and the other car nearly ran into my driver door.

Jan 5th 2010 – Intermittent problems with power loss.  No errors showing on engine management but we did have a ‘depollution’ error a few days previously. But not when the actual power loss happened. Car due for service on Jan 7th.

Jan 7th 2010 – Car serviced (20,000). Fuel mix altered to rectify power problem.

Jan 13th – 15th 2010 – Further power loss problems over three days. No error lights showing. Phoned dealer on 15th and arranged for car to be taken in for checks on 17th.

Jan 17th 2010 – Car to garage for checks. Fault found in the ‘brake indication’ sensor. Unit replaced. Car taken back by customer.

Jan 18th – Feb 9th 2010 – No problems at all. Car running extremely well. Acceleration and power levels perfect.

Feb 10th 2010 – Driving 5 miles into town experienced further power loss on acceleration. No error lights showing what the fault area is. Took car straight to dealer, who have kept it for a week. They can detect the power loss on their diagnostic tests, but it is not indicating where the fault is occurring.

Feb 16th 2010 – Car still being investigated by dealer. Phoned Peugeot Customer Dept Raised a complaint case with them. Awaiting response by Thusday 18th.

Feb 17th 2010 – Dealer rang to say that they still can’t reproduce fault. Been in touch with Peugeot Technical section at Peugeot UK. They have looked at the diagnostics done by the dealer and can’t see any problem. They suggested that the dealer reset the engine management electrical and drive the car over the next few days to try to reproduce the fault while driving. Then run diagnostics again and report back.

EDIT 27/05/10

No further problems since Feb 2010, but then on Monday 24/05/10 further power loss on acceleration. Took to garage same day and they ran diagnostics. Error found in the engine management system to do with engine temperature. Part replaced on 26/05/10 (yesterday). Car OK so far.

I have had similar problems with my 207 GT (2008)

For a while my GT was losing power, and I initially thought it was perhaps the engine was cold or maybe a sort of turbo lag (not that I'm very clued up about the finer points of car mechanics). But this eventually turned into a reoccuring problem and the loss of power was ridiculous.

Eventually took it to the garage and they did a software update on the engine management system which corrected the problem. But I feel it creeping back ever so slightly.

I know this hasn't helped with your problem, but perhaps take it as reassurance that someone has had the same problem (if more minor) than yours...

Thanks, Polyphonic. I sympathise with your problems, but I'm not surprised. The GT and GTi have now been withdrawn from production, and Peugeot seems to think they can rival Golf with a 308 GTi. If I weren't so angry, I would laugh.

I have updated my post #1 as I had another power loss a few days ago.

I believe that an ECU update and getting the Cam Chain + Tensioners will fix this problem Smile?

Hi All,

Over the last couple of months my 2007 207 GT has suffered the same problem with sudden power loss and having to return the car to the dealer.

June 2010   1st suffered problem, took to main dealer who plugged a computer in and fixed problem.....

.... for 3 weeks then in July 2010 went back and was told a brake indication switch needed to be replaced at a cost, work done and problem resolved.....

.....until 1st August when I've suffered exact same problem again and starting to get exasperated, car is with dealer as I type so we will see.

Carregwen... what has been the result of all your troubles since May as I would love to go to peugeuot armed with some ammunition to show this is NOT an isolated problem.

Hi,

I had the same problem as you're mentioning here. It has since been successfully resolved, so I hope I can contribute a bit back to the community Smile

I have a '07 207 GT with approx. 70.000 km. Bought it used 6-months with 17.000 km from my local Peugeot workshop, where it was driven by one of their salesmen and meticulously looked after.

I've had issues with power loss after 6 months of ownership. We tried this and that, including at first resetting /updating the ECU several times, then replacing Cam Chain + Tensioners, as described by wezzel. In all the cases this would solve the problem for a couple of weeks / months, then it would reappear without apparent reason. Since in all the cases the error code returned from the ECU was the same: poor and/or incorrect fuel to air mixture, and nothing we did would fix the problem effectively for good we suspected there might be an issue with the quality of  our local fuel, but that proved to be also incorrect. As time went the situation became more acute: whereas previously the ECU restart would be required once every few months, by the end of it we were doing it every two or three weeks.

The real cause of all this was a little more obscure and required a more thorough servicing procedure: apparently the valve heads (integrated in the engine cover) for earlier model years have a production fault which causes the excessive _oil_ fumes to seep back into the valves, where they don't burn up and in time will build up substantial layers of soot in the valves. This causes the fuel mixture to burn improperly and finally confuses the ECU into thinking there is a problem with fuel/air mixture.

The solution was to:
- disassemble the engine block
- clean the valves (you would have to see the amount of black soot we found in there)
- replace the engine cover with integrated valve heads with the updated part (as I understand standard in later models)
- replace the teflon layer between valve heads and valves
- replace the chain/tensioner again (since we had the engine disassembled already)

I would point out that this procedure was suggested from Peugeot France Technical Centre and was completely covered under warranty, since it was obviously a production fault. They threw in the extra chain/tensioner replacement as well, although it wasn't strictly necessary since we replaced it already once before with the updated version.

I hope this helps someone else with this issue, I know it was frustrating as hell for me Smile

Cheers from Slovenija,
Blaz

I am having the same problem - I just drove to Scotland and it felt like I was driving uphill all the way!
Bought the car new in March 2007 and can't get it in to my local dealer for over a week but somehow I think it will be costly as it is now out of warranty Sad

Cam chain / Tensioners: ~ 400 EUR with labour
Cleaning valves, replacing engine cover etc. ~ 500 EUR w/o labour (which can add up to another 300 EUR, because it takes them a whole day to disassemble, clean and reassemble everything)
Our prices, obviously. Labour might be more expensive in the UK, though I think the parts are not. If you do both procedures at the same time I'm sure labour would be cheaper.

However, this is clearly a design fault with the engine cover - I know for certain that the part they used for replacement is different than the old one - supposedly an update version for the newer 156/200 bhp engines. I would recommend taking up the issue with Peugeot UK.
