I recently purchased a 307 and was given two keys.

1 key seems to be the original having the Peugeot logo on one side and the two buttons on the other and everything with this fully works.  The other key is slightly different in that it has the Peugeot logo as before but no buttons on the key.  The key can open the doors (obviously via the manual method as there are no buttons present) but when I put it in the ignition the engine turns over but doesn't start.

I'm 99% sure this is because the immobiliser is preventing this key from working.  As there are no buttons on this key I am unable to program it in the usual way (i.e. holding the lock button, etc.).  The key appears solid and doesn't show any way of getting inside so am I right in saying that this spare key is nothing more than a door opener or can something be done to use it to start the car as well?

I think it should start it also, when you programme pressing the buttons when in ignition that only programmes the key  so the remote locks/unlocks. You need someone with peugeot planet to re programme the other key, you will also need the transponder code.

There was no transponder code when I brought the car.  I know what you are talking about though as I have one for my 306.

I'm guessing without this I will need to go to Peugeot and pay a fortune for them to plug my car into a computer and get this key programmed.

If I did get a new key with the 2 buttons I'm guessing the best I can do is program the lock/unlock but to get it starting the car it's a Peugeot job?

I was searching round the internet and came across this page...
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:UDPU-RD-7DUJ:www.howtomendit.com/answers.php%3Fid%3D49793+peugeot+307+key&cd=5&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

If yop hunt down the page there is the following text...
"Just tried this on my Peugeot 307, didnt think for a second that it would work but it did, my remote locking works and all I had to do was follow the instruction on the link below. Peugeot were going to charge me 75 to get the transponder code and then 1/2 labour to porgramme the key - genius!!"

Pls let us know if it works for you!

dysons,,,
that link is telling you how to re-synch a fob that is out of synch.

this will not program an unprogammed key fob to start a car.
good to see input tho.
