I recently replaced all of the rockers in the engine after a cambelt snapped! The problem I have now is that I've fitted the locking pins to the flywheel & camshaft pulley & fitted a new timing belt...when I turn the engine over by hand it gets to a certain point & then stops, as though its hit a valve...if I move the camshaft slightly to a 'rocking' position without the locking pin & take the belt off, then the cranshaft turns fine without hitting anything! Is there something I'm missing or is the camshaft pulley located wrong on the camshaft itself? Crying or Very sad

Hi Crow, I locked the crank through the hole just above the starter motor using the lock pin & turned the crank by hand until the pin located in the flywheel. I locked the camshaft using the locking pin through the hole on the camshaft pulley & this located into the hole in the casting behind.
Is there anything I've done wrong or missed going by what I've written above?
             Thanks, Chris.

Hi

my train of thought is that you may have paint marked the crank , and thus lost a couple of teeth as some hdi have movement in the crank sprocket,  the pin in the cam is positioned 7 / 8 o clock right??
sorry for the dum questions just want to rule ou the basics ,

maybe you have bent a valve in the original failure , not common but cant be ruled out??

Hi Crow, its the 8 valve HDI & also thought it might have a bent valve, so I took the belt back off, kept the locking pin in the camshaft & turned the crank by hand 8 times to make sure it had gone through every cylinder & it didn't lock up or touch a valve at all & there was compression on the cylinders...the camshaft locked in place is at 7oclock...I just thought I'd done something wrong & maybe a member like yourself with more experience with these cars than myself might've come across this same problem. I appreciate all your help & will look at anything you suggest.
                                       Thanks, Chris.

Hi Toddy, Do you know if the cam pulley locates onto a woodruff key or is it just a pressure fit onto the end of the camshaft, like a Renault?
                         Cheers, Chris.

hi,,thinking about it,the cam gear is held on by 3 bolts, onto the gear locater that bolts direct to cam, this is keyed,i'm assuming you took this off when doing rockers to replace cam seal????]

Hi

pulley type varies , earlier type up to about  03 is adjustable , but if removing pulley to do seal centre bolt is removed and no need to free off adjusting bolts , later pulley type is just standard pulley with hole for locking cam. and yes cam pulley locates on key way , both types!!

also, im sure that with the cam locked you should not be able to complete a full revolution of the crank??? one more thing is just to check that you have found the correct hole in the back of the flywheel. when in position, key way on crank should be at 11:00 / 11:30 ish and if you have moved adjuster bolts look for old witness marks to re align.

if you ve not touched those adjuster bolts, if you have them fitted, then i think something more sinister has occurred?
