Occasionally when driving at moderate speed my auto box tries to change from 2nd to 3rd (I think) revs go up and gear doesn't engage and then suddenly engages with a bit of a bang!
At weekend I tried to accelerate past something, gear box tried to kick down, revs went up and gear finally engaged with a very loud bang!
I took it into dealer today and whilst there was no message in the computer the technician said that Peugeot's solution to this problem was to replace the Hydraulic Fluid Block, which I understand is basically a manifold for all the hydraulic fluid, with solenoids in it, to send the fluid to the right places. Of course they wanted £1500.00 to replace this, including 2 'bottles' of hydraulic fluid at £90 each!
I asked why if one of the solenoids had failed why there wasn't a message in the computer, the technician didn't know why but repeated that the Peugeot solution is the £1500.00 one.
I've read here that replacing the gearbox fluid can sometimes cure problems with the auto box and wonder what any of the experts here think? Should I try that first before doing anything else? The car has done 56k, mostly motorway miles and is in good nick generally.
Grateful for your thoughts..... |

| I don't think the fluid can be replaced as its a sealed box, correct me if I'm wrong but this is what I've been told by my local dealer. |

Hi,
Wondered if you'd had any joy with your gearbox problem?
I'm experiencing the same issue on my GT
I'm hoping it's not the £1500 fix too...

| Well I know the gearbox fluid can be changed but no I haven't had any luck yet. I've been living with the problem and driving 'carefully'! Its definitely the hydraulic block though as Ive been reading other forums about this problem. Have a friendly local mechanic who may try and change it so I'll keep you informed....let me know if you find any solutions. |

Hi,
Nothing has shown up in the diagnostics, so the mechanic checked fluid levels and performed a 'reset' of the gearbox ECU. No difference unfortunately.
They stated that there are 2 authorised fixes from Peugeot.
Replacement of Hydraulic Chamber - circa £1500
Replacement of Gearbox - circa £3000
My biggest annoyance is that they can't guarantee replacing the Hydraulic Chamber will fix the issue, nor will it count towards the cost of the gearbox if it doesn't fix the problem...
Question - How can the replacement of the Hydraulic Chamber be an authorised fix if they're not sure it will fix the problem??
So, in summary, Peugeot can't tell me what's wrong with a Peugeot vehicle, and want to gamble with up to £4,500 of my money to fix it... I don't think so!
Think I'll run it till it dies then go back to a quality car manufacturer |

| I got a price for the hydraulic chamber or block from an on line parts place and they quoted me £850.00 just for that then there's labour, gearbox fluid etc. I also don't know what to do, I'm unconvinced it is the gearbox but like you nobody can really tell me for sure what is wrong. |

Hi,
Have spoken to an Auto Gearbox specialist, and they have said this is a common fault on this gearbox, cause is a split forward clutch - explained it as this.
The forward clutch acts as a cushion when changing gear to make a smooth gear change. It isn't engaging fully when changing between some of the gears, giving rise to the increase in revs and the thump when it finally hits the next gear. It will get progressively worse, and start doing it when changing from neutral to Drive as it deteriorates.
More bad news - it's approximately £1800 to fix! £1000 of which is parts cost.
I have been looking online for a second hand box, and have been passed details of one at £985 plus delivery - from an accident write off (rear end smash) box has done 31K. First Choice Car parts - 01706 651321 - ask for Phil Anderson.
Hope that helps you.
I have a warranty with Warranty Direct, and am assured the work will be covered, so am going to explore that option.
Cheers,
Bull! |
