Hi.
Sorry im new to the forums and im at my near frost bitten whits ends.
I have a pug 405 1.9 TD estate with a heater issue. Blower works just fine but the system only blows cold air.
The "direction" control appears to be driven by a cable but the temp seems to be governed by an electronic controller.
The car has air con but it has never worked since I've owned the car. I know that this model has a reputation to suffer from blocked heater matrix problems but ive removed the center console side cover and both pipes appear to be hot.
Due to the age and mileage of the vehicle i don't want to take it to a garage as the few who i have approached in the past seem to want to back away from the car as if it is possessed.
I can only assume that this is some kind of electrical fault and related to the "mixer flap" ? Ive looked at haynes manuals for the car ( on an M plate ) but they are near useless.
As i mentioned earlier the fan blows and blows well just no heat what so ever. I have also noticed that if i hit the AC button the light comes on VERY faintly and there is a change in the speed that the blower runs at. And on occasion i hear a "buzzing" near the little grill in the dash which is ( i assume ) the cabin temp sensor but this doesnt happen all of the time.
is there a way to access the mixer flap and " bodge " it so i can get some kind of heat till such time i can dedicate some time to do a more permanent repair ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

The mixer flap is driven by a stepper motor, this has probably failed. I never had to do that on my 405, so I can't help in more detail.
The buzzing in the little fan which draws air into the sensor from the cabin. |

can the stepper motor be disconnected or can the linkage be accessed without taking the dash out of the car ?
I think my main issue is that i simply cannot gain access to any scematics for that part of the car to get an idea if its something i can perhaps tackle myself.
are there any online resources for pug vehicles of this age ? |

I have exactly the same problem , just bought the car on ebay yesterday and didn't find out until I was 10 miles down the road and couldn't clear the mist . The haynes manual describes the removal / refitting of most of the unit but doesn't mention anything about stepper motors or electrical heat control. I have a second vehicle with a blown piston so I will strip it tomorrow before looking at my new aquisition. The drivers door window doesn't work either , both small items but annoying and rarely checked when making a purchase.
The block in my old vehicle is perfect with no discernable wear after 230k , anyone got a piston ? |

Hi there, I've got a 94 405 2.L Petrol, I had this same problem about a year ago only cold air and it was winter time when it happened , someone told me that the heat selector behind the dash has failed and is stuck in the cold position, and he said if you take it to a Pug dealer he will remove the entire dashboard to change that part and also relive you of alot of cash!!!!, he told me how to do it yourself, it's been some time but this is how I did it.
There are 2 screws holding the top and bottom covers behind the steering wheel undo them and remove the covers.
Then get down under the steering wheel and with a torch look to the left side of the wheel inside the dash and you will see a square or rectangle box with 2 screws with a black wire going inside it, undo those 2 screws remove the cover and inside you will a lever, when you select the temp in your car between hot and cold this lever moves from left to right or vice versa, but where ever the lever is you push it to the other side and then you stuff some stuffing or some thing so it doesn't move back to the cold position, and then replace the cover you took of, then start the car and hot air will come then replace the top and bottom covers behind the wheel, AND NOW A WARNING it may look hard, impossible, and there will be alot of swearing, cursing, from you LOL, but it can be done "WHY" because I did it, and then in the summer move the lever back for cold air. |

I have done exactly the same as Nash today. I had to lie on the road to get into the area under the steering column and fiddle the screws out!
I posted the selfsame question a while back but NOW I have heat and it is gorgeous!
It can be done but it is fiddly!
Regards, Peter. |
