I have a Peugeot Expert Van 1.9d at the moment but this problem is the same as my dads Citroen Synergie and a peugeot 406.

When you turn the key the glow plug light on the dash goes out too quickly.

If you try to start the car when the glow plug light goes out it won't.

If you ignore the glow plug light on the dash and instead 'listen for the click' (relay??) it will start.

How can i fix the problem. If i sell the vehicle i don't want to have to say 'listen for the click'.

What controls the amount of time the glow plug light stays on for and how can i make the light going out coincide with the click?

I have been told that the temperature switch on the thermostat housing also contributes to starting issues.

If after sorting the above the engine still doesn't start and you have replaced and checked out the glow plugs does the temperature switch tell the ecu the temperature of the glow plugs.

If this switch is faulty could it tell the ecu that the actual temperature of the glow plugs isn't what they are? Perhaps it could be telling the ecu that they are hotter than they are and the ecu is stopping them heating to the required temperature to start the car....

If this assumption on my part is right is there any way of testing the temperature switch to see if it is working correctly?

Thanks

2004.

I think you may be right but am interested to know about the timing of the glow plug coinciding with the glow plugs being hot enough and the temp switch which affects lots of diesels

hi,
glow plug light do not stop on long nowadays if temp outside above 5 degrees glow plugs dont  work at all, so nothing wrong with light,
so if bad starting look elsewhere.
