There seems to be a lot of people on the internet complaining about the same problem.  I had to call the recovery service when this happened to my  four year old 207 on the same day as yourself! My car has also only done just over 30000 miles.  To make matters worse I just paid 199 for a level 2 service at a dealership which is supposed to include a check of the drive belts. I also found that the economy mode made it impossible to close the windows and has left the car open to the elements.
Dealership a waste of space, awaiting a response from Peugeot UK.

Something here is a bit iffy . . . my understanding is that the 207 petrol engines are Mini/BMW units which use CHAINS. I am getting worried now having just brought my 27 month old 207 back from the dealer to attend to a squeak. The mechanic initially thought it was a belt issue - the front desk said the problem was the water pump. As they say "go figure"!

4 Oct update . . I have to recognize that the timing belt could well be hidden under a housing as compared with the auxilliary belt that runs the alternator and a/c etc

I have a 4yr old 207 that has done 39k and my belt went last night and had to get recovered to dealership.  They are looking at it as we speak to see if there was a reason it went.  Seems they are looking for an excuse not to sort this out for me!!!  Any idea of amount of damage I may have to face?

Well these posts certainly seem to confirm the 207 doesn't use a chain to drive the mechanicals - I'm gonna contact the 'authority' that gave me this info and on which I based my purchase 27 months/15000 miles ago. Since my earlier post on 15 July I had to take my 207 to the dealer for a squeak from the engine compartment . . . the worksheet shows 'foreign bodies in friction BELT grooves' but they then also replaced the water pump. Not a good advert for the model - fit for purpose? I don't think so! (And yet there's plenty of old 206s running about)

The'' friction belt grooves'' the garage referred to are probably the ribs in the auxilary drive belt which is exposed to the elements and could pick up dirt from the road, the usual sign of this belts' demise is when micro cracks are visible on the ribs. The timing belt is enclosed in plastic covers to prevent damage from road debris, so yours hasn't been changed, it would be advisable to check this soon!
I've run a 206 for four years now with no problems, after reading some of the horror stories on this forum I'm glad I didn't buy a 207!.....Mike.

Similar thing happened to me recently on my 207, 4 years old / 25,000 miles

Turned out the water pump had collapsed which caused the cam belt to snap and the valves to bend. Took it to a main dealers and called Peugeot UK to complain.

Result - Peugeot UK have offered to replace the engine for a nominal fee as these things shouldn't happen so early in the car's life. Very impressed with Peugeot customer service especially as car was well out of warranty.

Having a full, regular service history was a massive advantage here

Not all the Peugeot engines uses belts.

The turbo engines use chains. The ones from the 207 GT and the 207 GTI have THP 1.6 engines. This engine is also used in the Mini Cooper S and the Citroen DS3.

Totally gutted my 2007 peugeot 207 broke down...had to get it recovered and taken home then towed to garage the next day. My car also done around 33,000 miles been regularly serviced etc. Also turned out to be water pump that had collapsed which caused belt to snap and valves to bend.
Cost me over £800 to repair...totally GUTTED cant afford this so close to christmas.
My first peugeot and likely to be my last...
You dont expect this to happen on a car of this age and of low miles.
What can i do?

My peugeot 207 cambelt went last week only 37000 miles, 2007 plate
1.4 petrol engine,
The water pump bearing failed causing the belt to rub against the engine mount and wear out,
contacted my local dealer who said i would have to pay for them to strip down and investigate before they could submit a goodwill claim to peugeot and they may or may not contribute!
as i am a mechanic i tried a new water pump and timing belt kit on it but it had no compression,
I removed the cylinder head and found all 8 exhaust valves bent!
top of the pistons are marked abit but will be fine, cylinder head not damaged so should get away with just new valves!
I Think this water pump failure is common and if you have a 207 its well worth removing your top cam belt cover (just clips off) and checking the condition of your belt, looking at mine i can see the belt must have been rubbing the engine mount for a long time before the cambelt finally gave up, due to it cut a grove into the mount!
The belts ment to last 80000 miles or 10 years before it is changed!
