Sad I have just bought this 1998peugeot306, I was told the car had been smoked in, myself being a none smoker thought the smell was stale cigarette smoke. but  when i put the heater on the horrible smell was  blowing in to the car.
I used a deoderiser spray when i got home and sprayed it under the grill where the wiper motor is.
this blowed the deoderant in to the car and i thought that would do the job.
unfortunately it was only for a  couple of minutes.
when the heater is blowing hot air the car fills up with this horrible smell. and you have to wind the window down.
how can  get this sorted out please.
questions ? what could it be.   does anyone know how to rectify the problem with out it costing me a lot of money.
I am only on old age pension and do not have a lot of income.
I will have a go at most jobs providing they are not to technical.
any help would be appreciated.

the car does not have a pollen filter, it just appears to be a basic car. even the windows are the wind up type.
and the smell is only when the heater is on and it gets stronger as the temperature rises.
thanks  RED XSI  for making an effort to eliminate and  isolate what the cause could be.

Strange though it may sound, I'd look for dead rodents in the air circulation pipes.

Can you describe the smell?

Thanks  gibbo
I will try to discribe the smell,  it is very much like the smell that you get from a radiator that is being flushed.
a rusty metalic pungent smell  that you can almost taste. like the smell you get in home radiators if  you change a very old one.
that is the best i can do in discribing the smell.
I have just ordered a haynes manual. hopefuly there will be something in there to at least show me how to flush and  the bleed the system. I have bought rad flush and rad weld to be on the safe side, but will have to wait now untill the manual arrives before i start to undo any fittings.
If i can help anyone else with info from the book  once it arrives it will be my pleasure to pass it on.

i have had 2 306xsi's and every one of them had that prfoblem. your radiator is probably still the original and might be corroded. open the bonet and look at the rad, if there is a greenish type of formation any whare on the radiator its on its way out. with both my old 306'es i have had to replace em, wath it coz if it starts to leak you will blow the head gasket.... big money to replace that and its never tha same after

I think there are instructions on here on flushing and bleeding the coolant system.  I changed mine with these before Xmas and didn't need a Haynes manual.

The only thing I would add to that is the bit about having a bottle as a makeshift expansion tank filler.  If you use a 2L pop bottle (Coke, Lemonade, whatever), it won't fit into the top of the expansion tank, but if you get a stanley knife and gently trim off a bit from the fat plastic "ring" around the neck, it will fit perfectly.
