Hi guys

This is my first post.

When the timing belt snaps on a 406 does it cause any damage?

The reason i am asking this is because years ago i used to have a cavalier and the belt went on it with no damage at all.

Many thanks.

The most likely damage is one or more valves being bent.  Worse case scenario a piston could also be damaged and as Rikko stated possible damage to the cam. Needless to say none of this can be determined until the head has been removed.  I have had cam belt failures on both a Peugeot and Renault, fortunately only valve damage occured. Needless to say, not a cheap repair I am afraid.

Free timing belt with every replacement head gasket!

A good reason for having an 8v motor instead of a 16'er.

Causes damage to all cars if the belt snaps, you can get very very lucky and have no damage or alot can be caused, which is usually the case, just make sure you have a good belt on the car and you wont need to find out  Razz

Ah - well - bent valves, snapped cam shafts, bent con rods, bent cranks - all of those.
Can be totaled basically.  Depends how fast the engine was going, and if there was any load on it.

I had it go on my '96 2.0 16V a mile away from the guys house where i bought it, was approaching a junction at the time and i'm pretty sure i was more or less stationary without my foot on the accelerator as i was on the brakes.

The engine ate 12 of the valves, actually took the head off one of them & took a chunk out of the valve seat.

Fixed it ourselves though apart from the 70 it cost to get the head repaired & skimmed.
