Hi all. My girlfriends har was over heating eventually would not start. I towed her home and had a look. No coolant. Topped her up and tried to fire her up and she maybe fires on 1 cyl but i notice there is water in the exhaust and quite a high pressure in the cooling system.
Is this the classic symptoms on a blown head gasket?
Any advice much appreciated. |

If it wont fire now its full of water then its highly likely your headgasket has gone.
You only get oil in the water if the gasket has gone over an oil way - this sounds like an interbore failure.
What engine is it please? |

No Worries matey - easily done.
looks like its a head off time and check for damage. may as well do the cam belt at the same time, check water pump, head skim, new gasket and away/. |

Ha. Got the head off just now. Didn't notice any leak paths but i noticed some small cracks around the ringlands on the face.
I assume that this is knackered?
With the head off, how can I check if there is any bottom end damage?
Thanks. Any advice appreciated. |

Look at the bores to see if there scored. I always run a small feeler blade around the top of the piston to make sure the top compression ring is still in place.
When they get too hot the rings receed into the groves and stay there. |

Hi matey.
Could you send me some photos?
Well you can rotate the crank around and just 'look'. Take the sump off and do the same.
But if you want to be really sure you'll have to undo the con rod bolts and remove the pistons - then do some measuring.
Personally - if you just spin the crank around and have a good look your probably as well to risk it.
Are you within striking distance of me? I'd come have a look if so. |
