Hummm funnily enough my N/S suspension spring had just broken, fingers crossed it hasn't damaged the cv boot, and a close pal of mine's Pug has also suffered the same injury, and ditto happened whilst car's were parked up, hummm does rather appear to me that it is a common fault and a very dangerous one at that! Think I will get writing.

It's now happened to me twice.... once on a 3l 406 about 7 years ago and on my current 406 (2L estate) on Friday. Both times having reversed off the drive then 'Crunch!' Â Bottom coil (front NS) snapped off dropping the rest of the spring down onto drive shaft with associated strain to brake flexible and broken pad-wear wire. The scary bit is I was due to drive 70ml each way to Heathrow the following morning to collect grandson.

It happened to me last year. My 406 is 1996, so no complaint in terms of longevity of the spring but I was alarmed by the damage done to surounding parts. I was driving at 40 MPH when it happened. loud explosive sound, ripped a 6 inch slit in the tyre, shredded to CV gaiter and bend a tie rod. Will peugeot please ensure that any future design includes some form of containment for the broken spring. Yes it was a scarry incident, my passenger was extremely alarmed, luck was with me and I manged to hold a line whilst halting. It would have been far less serious if the tyre had not deflated instantly which is the real danger and reason for providing containment.

Not only the 406 !
Our 1007 (same suspension as the 207 and the Citroen C3) broke down on 11th February with my wife and 4 year old grandchild in it. Broken spring slashed the tyre and car immobilised - fortunately she was able to stop without hitting anything.
RAC - didn't answer emergency call and have yet to answer email and letter of complaint
Peugeot Care - not answering my emails
