| I've read lots of posts about steering vibration on 407 at speeds >70mph. Like most 407 owners have had new susp ball joints at <40k miles and new tyres but hasn't cured it. Balanced 3x but still there. Dealer says Michelin tyres could be problem and suggests Pirellis. I wondered if it could be distorted alloy wheels. Anyone out there had success with diagnosis and curing it ?? Yours in hope !! |

dont forget it could be your discs? or even pads? misaligned calipers?
I was under the impression that Pirelli are the 'specified' tyre for pugs anyway. |

| I have slight vibration at 70+ but not excessive. I have the 407SW 3.0L Petrol. I have Pirellis all round and recently had 2 new front tyres fitted & balanced, but vibration is till there at higher speeds. A recent 60,000 mile service didn't pick up anything, but suspect the dealer doesn't check the steering components in any great detail! |

| If it were discs then they would only vibrate when braking; however if the discs have been replaced there may be a possibility of some crud behind the disc when they were mounted, this would throw the whole thing off true causing vibration while driving. |

not necescarilly. if the disc/s are warped it will be unbalanced, causing vibration at certain speed.
have you had the fronts tracked? might be an idea. had a few small knocks/mounting kerbs etc, and my tracking was out 4mm. |

But if the discs were warped you would always feel it under braking, and I can't see how out of true tracking would make a wheel unbalanced |

to be honest then im out of ideas!
the usual and most common causes are to my knowledge,
unbalanced wheels (remember there are two ways to balance a wheel, static and dynamic, although i think dynamic is now common anyway)
uneven tyre wear or bent rims (out of round).
wheel to axle mounting error
drive train component failure (i'd assume a driveshaft)
brake compnent failure (as i've already suggested)
suspension component failure (could be more than ball joints) |

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. On balancing issue I've had all 4 done yet again (at different place) and though they did make some changes to the weights it didn't make any difference to the problem. I had new disks last month at 40k (surprising I thought - as I'd only had one set of tyres and one set of pads which were all changed at same time as disks). Sooo, I think seems unlikely to be tyres or disks.
I've noticed the vibration comes on after a while at 70+ (that is it isn't always noticeable). The lack of consistent vibration makes me think maybe it's not an out of balance thing but a suspension problem. I'm going to take it back in to Dealer to see if they can come up with some ideas. I'll post any results ! |

| Just thinking a bit about this, it may (and I do say may) be a low level engine misfire, or a driveshaft intermediate bearing. Mr Cellexe is correct saying it maybe a bent wheel, even if the wheels are balanced the wheel would still be bent causing vibration at speed. |

I doubt a missifre.
Intermediate drive shaft bearing or out of balance D/S. |
