Hiya Guys and Girls,..... I'm new to posting so i hope i post this in the right place!!  Can anyone give me some advice on the following problem concerning my 1996 406 estate, 2.1 TD non HDI.
Today the car suddenly suffered a great loss in power and the engine management light came on. After changing throttle position the car responded again as normal. Soon after it happened again and again and again.  I read on the Peugeot forum tonight about this problem and a person mentioned revving the car to 2000 rpm whilst stationary and whilst holding these revs press the brake pedal. I tried this and immediately the engine management light came on and the revs reduced to idle. Is this normal??? Or does this indicate a problem of a particular component? Unfortunately the posting i read did not explain if this behaviour was normal or abnormal.  I also read somewhere that this may have something to do with the ABS. My front brake discs and pads are new and i also cleaned the ABS sensors recently. I will admit that the rear brakes are shot to bits!!! Handbrake pads, disc pads and discs + Handbrake cable are all in very poor condition and make nasty noises upon braking. Could this be a possible cause? I always try and keep my cars in tip top condition but i was quoted nearly £800 by Peugeot to have this fixed and i just cannot afford it.
Could a faulty ABS unit/units be wearing the brakes significantly and thus causing this new problem?
I know lots about cars but this has really thrown me!
Any advice would be VERY gratefully received as i have a very long drive on Sunday morning, 3 days away.
 Thanks.  Rob.

Your vehicle doesnt have any feeback from the brake pedal switch to the basic injection ECU.

I dont see it being related to the ABS.

I would 'guess' that its a fuel related issue.

Ideally any the code(s) that caused the MIL to illiminate should be obtained.

Obtain fault codes to see what is  illuminating the MIL.

no rpm with brake
this is a safety device, if the flyby wire throttle goes full throttle for some reason,
when you touch the brake it cuts the power automatically, so if you have a touch brake light switch watch out,
