Hi there.
I own a 307SW 1.6Hdi 110BHP Peugeot. I want to know at what mileage I should change the timing belt for the first time?
I live in Cyprus, and I have around 110,000 Kilometers (not miles) on the clock. The dealer over here is not particularly trustworthy, and I have been told (by several sources) that the first timing belt change is at 96,000 miles (i.e. 154,000 kilometers).
The dealership told me that it should be done at 80,000 kilometers (and at a push, 100,000 kilometers).
Please can someone set me straight, as they are telling me it will cost around €1000 and I don't really want to pay that money if I don't have to.
The car runs just fine, by the way. I'm only driving on motorways and a constant speed (110KM/H which is 70MPH). I would say that the car is not being used in an extreme way. |

I believe it is around 120,000 miles or so, but I did mine at 100,000 miles to be on the safe side.
I did it myself & only took a couple of hours. 1000 euros sounds very expensive to me! |

Yeah. It is really expensive. I found a mechanic who specializes in Peugeot, and has a really good reputation. He quoted me around 300-350 Euros. He told me that around 100,000 miles (160,000 KM) is about right for the first timing belt change.
I don't think I'll be going to the main dealership again. Anyhow, my waranty has expired, so there is no point. |

I told the main dealership that I wasn't going to change the timing belt now, and that I was going to wait for my car to do 100,000 miles first. They said that if I didn't change it now, I was running the risk of the timing belt breaking, and having a huge repair bill for my engine.
I'm a bit scared now. Is there anyone else who can give me their opinion? Are they just trying to make money out of me? |

| Hi, The problem with this issue is that a timing belt is an item that can break at any time, but it must be given a" life "for servicing purposes. I would agree with the 100,000 mile garage as a sensible change period . Usually the belt only breaks early because of another problem but there is no real answer. My 407 1.6 HDI is having a belt kit and water pump this week at 98,000 miles and when I get the old belt back I will post the condition but as my mechanic says, they can look fine and go soon after. If its any help I have not heard of any belt failure on this engine but if anyone knows different please let us know the details. |

| I understand what you are saying, but they (Peugeot Cyprus) are telling me that the first cambelt change is at 50,000 miles!!! I can understand taking precautions, but I think they are going too far, at my expense!!!! |
