right, here's the problem, when my car is crawling along in and out of first and second gear the temperature creeps up to about 90degrees and then shoots up to the red, making the fan kick in at full blast to cool it back down. this then continues while ever i am crawling along. but if i go back into third gear and maintain some speed the probem stops! ive recently had the head gasket skimmed becasue it was needed. the car is a 206 51 plate 1.4 unleaded!
any help or ideas would be appreciated, thanks

Sounds like the Low speed fan resistor or relay has gone so its cutting straight to the high speed fan once it gets well hot.

Open the bonnet, and release the front grill clips (4 black plastic trim locks), undo the two screws with hex sockets in the heads on the body matched plastic bit, and pull off the front grill (Two pull of clips next to each headlight). Then next to the fan theres a plastic cover with another 3 plastic trim clips. If you remove this, the relays are in behind. The low speed one is at the top.

I bought a new relay out of maplin for 5.72, replaced the fitted relay and problem solved on mine. I could have got by with a cheaper relay but went for a similar one. The standard one is 30A Single pole double throw (SPDT), and the one from Maplin was a 40A SPDT, They also had 40A SPST (one pin less but its unused) for 2.80.

Can also be corroded wires or contacts on the sockets.

The book says to lift the car and remove the bumper as well for easier access but I found this was unnecessary, though the bottom trim clip needed opening/closing with a longish screwdriver.

I reckon a garage would be a 1-2 hours labour Plus a peugeot relay (13), and maybe a new socket, etc etc...

Hope this helps

hi,,i'd say if you've got some diy ability and some tolls then yes this is a easy repair.
thats assuming that the relay is the fix?
as its also possible that the fan yours has a fan resistor?
10mm bolt secures it to fan cowl, seen through lower grill in bumper.

Thanks for the reply's I have finally got round to changing the relay! It took around an hour due to the condition of car and fear of breaking anything! Smile but I have fitted the new relay and took it out for a run and it seems to be working great on the test run!
It going to take me Scotland soon so I'll update after that hopefully with good results many thanks to all who gave contributions!
Thanks
