on my 2006 307 1.6 petrol manual there is NO oil fill or level check hole for the gearbox.

To change the gearbox oil.

1 drain by removing the drain plug on the lower differential casing of the gear box. an 8mm MALE socket is required.

2 To fill with oil of the stated quantity ( 2 ltr in this case) Do the following:-

steps a,b,c are for ease of access

a, remove 2 screws from brake fluid container and rest on top of the battery casing.(' Idea

b, Â remove 8 screws holding the cam cover on.(' Idea

')
c, Â remove the breather pipe from air intake.
d, remove the air intake.
e, then you can see the gearbox breather. the top of this clips off and you can add the required measure of of oil SLOWLY as it is only a small hole
DO NOT SPILL ANY as there is no level check hole.

A wise maintenance decision. The procedure is identical on my '57 plate 206 petrol. Peugeot state that the gearbox is sealed for life and the oil never requires changing, but in normal wear and tear, microscopic steel swarf from the gear teeth, and brass swarf from the baulk rings is held in the oil, the steel swarf should be attracted to a magnet inside the gearbox and rendered static, but brass swarf will be held in suspension in the oil and can damage the bearings. Additionally, condensation can build up and emulsify the oil, reducing its wear protection on all the internal components.
The drain plug is 8mm square key, I bought a 3 foot length of 8mm square rod from B&Q for 3 pounds and cut and bent it to a suitable size/shape. I bought 2 litres of the correct oil from Peugeot Main Dealer for 14 pounds. A small plastic filler cone from Poundland can be used to avoid spillage when refilling through the breather on top of the gearbox. All this small expense and little work is good insurance against very expensive gearbox repair/replacement........Mike.
