I`ve just aquired a 405 diesel estate, 10 years old, it`s done 94,000 miles and idles o.k.
There seems to be a intermittent lack of power and it`s cut out on me half a dozen times. Usually when coming down the gears when travelling down hill. It starts up again without any problem.

Does anyone have any ideas?

You could start with a fuel filter change. You don't know how long its been there and the problem could be fuel starvation. Then get the the injectors checked.

i too have just started getting this problem on my 1994 405 , i can be driving along great and then soon as you come to a junction or roundabout and ease off the gas it just cuts out ,but mine is a sod to restart ,ive changed the fuel filter but not had a chance today to test it out Rolling Eyes

Mine was cutting out and struggling to start not long after I would start it in the morning.

I discovered there was a leak on the side of the diesel filter bowl just behind the oil dipstick.

I found the leak by squeezing the fuel bleed bulb - a black thing just on top of the drivers wing next to the engine. When I squeezed it, I could see the fuel leaking out.

I washed it off with petrol one morning and coated it with silicone out of a tube.

Starts easily and doesnt stop any more.

I also found the injector return pipe end stopper thing was holed and squirting out diesel. Fixing this made the car much better to drive.
