6 months ago we purchased a 2002 02 plate 307 2.0hdi rapier (90). The car had only done 67500 miles with full dealer service history. We paid £3600. So Far we have had to have new brakes fitted and re charge the air-con. Although not big jobs ,quite exspensive. 2 weeks ago the engine management unit came on and said on the display "anti pollution fault". It only stayed on for a few seconds then went off. I took the car straight to the dealer and they advise to keep a eye on it and if it happened again to take the car back to them. We then never had any problems with it until yesturday. The same fault displayed. So i took it back and they ran a diagnostic test for £63.55. After about a hour and a half they came back with results. They said the inside parts of the fuel pump had broken into many parts and metal filings were in the complete fuel system. I was shocked as was the servive manager as he had not seen this problem on any car he said. The solution is a whole new fuel SYSTEM as if i replaced just the tank, the filings would still be in the system. I got them to give me a rough price for a new fuel system.The price is £3450 inc VAT. This is more than the car is worth. He said my car is basically a mechanical write off. To add to this ,nobody knows why or when the pump broke. They said my car could break down tomorrow or in 6 months,nobody knows. The dealer said once the car 's fuel supply gets less and less it will then stop but while fuel supply is able to get through it will run. Just wondered if anyone had come across the same problem or has any advise. I spoke to peugeot uk last night and they said the they had never heard off it as the the fuel pump should basically last the life off the car. Anyway thanks for reading.

I had the exact same problem on the first Peugeot 307 i had (i've no idea why / how i ended up with another one......although this one seems to be going ok)

Mine was exactly the same spec / year as yours.

I got a couple of anti pollution faults but no diagnosis was given. About a month later i became aware of a hesitation on accelerating. It was inconsistent, but definitely a bit annoying. On taking it back to peugeot they advised that the fuel pump was breaking up into the fuel lines and they thought the hesitation was being caused by injectors being blocked by metal swarf from the pump. Apparently there are two different makes of fuel pumps on 307's (seimens and bosch?) and it happens on one in particular. The clever chaps on here might know more about this.

As you said, they cannot just replace the pump and the swarf will still be in the system.....they need to replace all fuel lines. Peugeot garage also gave me the impression that the fuel pump didnt just break one day, rather it slowly breaks up over a period of time and metal bits will just continue to build up until you have a dead car.

Long story short i traded the car in.........peugeot were looking for about 3.5k for a repair and privately i could get it as low as £2k...........just wasnt worth it.

Gutted to hear of someone in the same situation and sorry i cant provide any good news.......basically just a confirmation that if you want to keep the car there isnt a cheap way out of this.

Same thing happened to me back in may 2008-swarf in the fuel pump/system. Car was sluggish for a while and difficult to start then came to a complete halt. Long story cut short Peugeot advised £3,200 to repair. As the car was a couple of weeks out of warranty I felt fairly aggrieved and got in touch with their customer HQ in Coventry. They agreed to pay £2,200 ish and I had to contribute £800. Don't let them off the hook-fight for a contribution. They have denied any possible design fault-absolute crap!! I know as much about brain surgery as I do about cars-but I do know when I'm being fobbed off. I'm still trying to get my £800 back!!

I also have a Peugeot 307 53/04plate withe the sam problem...

Have you sorted yours and how?

I have been quoted 2.5k and my car is only wurth 3k

I don't know what to do with mine (Can I claim of my car insurance for a 'Mechanical writeoff')

Hi

Look , Peugeot are simply covering all angles here , with the replacemnet of the complete injection system!

any good garage should be able to strip and clean fuel lines injector rail , replace scavenge pump clean tank and filter housing.

so although its not going to be the cheapest fix in the world , it wont cost as much as you guys have been quoated!

The likely hood is you will get away with replacing the HP pump and cleaning everything - but you have to be very meticulous.

Hi guys, I've got pretty much the same problem!

My 307 is a 2.0 hdi Y plated 2001 90 bhp jobby. I have been getting the antipollution fault warning every now and then, and sometimes an audible beep (but no message) when i turn the car off. I went to a main dealer here in Essex who told me that the fuel pump was breaking down, metal in the system etc. quoted me £930 for a H.P. Pump (part no. 1921N4), Fuel filter housing (part no. 190162) drain the tank, and labour.

I see that the guys above were quoted a lot more, but I still feel like I'm being mugged. I've had a (very little) look into getting the parts myself, ebay has a lot of peugeot fuel pumps available, but none matching the part numbers above, so I'm a bit lost.

I've called around a few places, one in particular was adamant that it didn't sound like a fuel pump issue, he stated that the car would have issues starting if it was the pump he thought it'd be a valve issue. Since I am a car numpty I'm not sure what to believe, though naively would think that the main dealer would know better?

Anyone know of a good mechanic that's not going to rip me off here in Essex?

Any help appreciated.

Hi all, Got to replace the pump on my 2.9ltr hdi 307 after a similar problem, Not 2 worried about fitting of pump as have got access to autodata and locking tools. BUT ---

I am unsure of how to clean the fuel system through and i am hoping you could point me in the rite direction?

Also after fitting pump and cleaning through the sytem do you have to prime the pump/system if so how do you do this.???
