While driving the car the STOP warning light comes on and the readout says "engine coolant temperature too high" despite the fact that the coolant has barely had time to warm up let alone overheat.  The temp gauge rises to max and then goes back down to normal after about 5 seconds. This is intermittent fault and doing my head in.

Hi

replace coolant temp sensor, you dont say which type of 307 you have which is always useful  Smile

get one from Peugeot not factor , they are about a tenner

if hdi, sensor is located in water jacket on the side of the head right side as you look at engine , removal of air cleaner box improves access

Sorry the car is 2.0 hdi rapier 2002. Is this a common fault, any idea of cost of  sensor? Thanks in advance.

Hi

yes this is a fairly common fault, as said they are about a tenner , and if fitting it yourself make sure you retrive the rubber o ring that seals the sensor and stops the water leaking , and when fitted bleed the cooling system correctly and check no water is leaking from the sensor

is the car getting hot ?? the sensor issue is the sort of issue that occurs as soon as car has started , so when it has no chance to get hot , if yours is the same id suggest wiring or duff sensor , i always source from pug with any sensor

well quite obviously your car , if temp is increasing in trafic , is overheating not a sensor issue me thinks , you could have a cooling fan issue i.e its not switching on when it should , you could have a thermostat issue although unlikely , worst case could be more serious , but id hazard a guess on cooling fan , does it cut in when engine temp gets high?

Yeah... We've got an 2002 307 1.6 petrol with same problem.... Its only started after we got a major service done, inc. new water pump and timing belt...... its now been in mechanic shop (peugeot specialist) for a week and he doesn't know W.T.F either.....    It does it several times a day.... your just driving along, then warning light comes on 'STOP' ... temp gauge in the RED...beep-beep-beep-beep..... then temp gauge drops to normal temp in 5 seconds......
When it did it the other day..... the moment the 'STOP' light came on i pulled over, opened bonnet, the engine was hot but the radiator was stone cold.......
We think it could be an air lock somehow..... Ive surgested he jacks up the left hand side so when he fills the radiator fluid, the bleed screw (on left firewall) will be higher so maybe a better chance to get all the air out ?????????
