| i have a 2002 peugeot 307 hdi which i had a problem with a squeling noise which came from the fanbelt area so i had this changed at the garage , this did not solve the problem so it was suggested that the tension pully be replaced and another small puller which was done, the noise did go for a short time but does come back it seems theres a slight loss of power and when it stops squeling it seems to pick up the power again, if ur stopped at lights or going very slow it makes this noise now and again so i dip the clutch and rev the engine and it goes, it never appeares at speed, anyone any ideas ?i |

Ok im pressuming here that you have electric power steering , not sure on the earlier models ( feel free to step in Toddy) if so i would check that belt has been fitted correctly and it is the correct length belt>
then i would be looking at alternator pulley! yours i believe should have free wheeling pulley and they can sieze and cause vibration / noise issues! to check it remove belt and alt pulley should spin clockwise and whilst the main shaft in the alt is spinning you should be able to hold still the outer part of the pulley , basically it should move both ways!1
If you have conventional engine driven P/S then maybe issue with pump but i think yours should be electric.
after this i would be considering cambelt roller or tensioner.

hi crow, the noise is exactly like the fanbelt slipping and if you was to drop a little water on it as its ticking over the noise goes, the belt was fitted at a garage that deals in peugeots so have to guess its fitted correctly like i said i have had the fanbelt tensioner and roller replaced also as a mechanic said it could be that, i dont walem to keep replaceing parts at silly prices, think the next stage is to get the cambelt checked not sure the cambelt would slip and make that noise the car has only done 50k and runs like a dream. |

Yeah I think i would be checking the alternatior pulley then!!
if found to be siezed no need to replace the whole alternator , pulley can be sourced from Euro Car parts or Motorquip for around £45 mark
about 1 or just under hours labour although tool will be needed to remove and refit!!

cheers will do that, but just to add my lad borrowed the car tonight to take his girlfreind home, he rang me to say all the warning lights was on and the car would not start, the fanbelt had broken had to jump start the car to get it going and back home then checked the pulley on the alternator which is moving quite freely so im thinking the new fanbelt may not have been fitted correctly, i dont know will find out when i get a new fanbelt tommorow, will let you know how i get on lol [list] |

hi,,when you say moves freely?
do you mean you have locked the internals off alternator and the pulley spins independant?
or just that it spins freely with internals spinning also?

ok checked the pulley and if turned clockwise you can see it turning the shaft inside but if you stick screwdriver in to stop the shaft it will only turn anti clockwise ? |

yeah thats what it should do so as long as it aint stiff then it sounds like its ok!!
so this garage that caters for puegeot and citreons couldnt fit the correct fan belt or fit the correct one properley?? ....hmmm i think its time you looked for another garage mate!! ( fan belt failure due to incorrect fitting on Pugs / Cit 9 times out of 10 leads to a destroyed engine so thank your lucky stars old chap!!)

hi crow, no its not stiff easy to turn by hand but moves more freely when i dont jam the interal shaft, been pricing valeo alternators online and working out around £240 so hoping it is just a badly fitted belt, thanks for your advice just cant get a garage to fit the belt for a day or two around here lol. having found a garage i cant get the car to start because i cant turn off the alarm/immobiliser ive reset the key but nothing at all happens on the phlip buttons i can only lock the car on the door now and as soon as i unlock it the siren goes and the car wont start it should still start without the fanbelt as it did before when the original belt broke, may have to tow it to the garage let them sort it out. |
