As the winter draws in people tend to notice that starting their car can be difficult, as its only ever winter that really shows these problems at their worst.
Typically a diesel will be difficult to start, as it ages the glow plugs lose their efficiency and similarly the battery does not hold its original charge level.
Petrol cars less susceptible to cold starting problems as they are spark ignited so don't rely on heat as aid to starting. However problems can still arise from poorly maintained cars.
