Burning smell from engine

Noticed a burning smell from engine of wife's 5008 1.6hdi auto yesterday. Its 8 years old. Had it 3 months. So far so good.
Opened bonnet and noticed coolant level was way below.min level so I topped it up today and took it for a drive. It goes fine but the smell persists. Oil level fine too.
Any ideas?
