Hello people,

I am currenty in the process of removing the gearbox from my 405 as the clutch arm has jammed back and will not release. I am almost ready to drop the gearbox other than the fact of i cant seem to figure out how to remove the right hand drive shaft??  i have done this procedure on my 2.0ltr td vectra with little to no hassle in regards to the drive shafts comming out, however i did not have to deal with an intermediate  bearing, atleast thats what i think its called(no manual). So basicaly in a nut shell i simply need to know how to remove the right hand driveshaft so i can get to see whats going on in the gearbox.

Also someone suggested to just remove the g/box and slide it off the drive shaft when removing, i dont feel this would go to well especialy upon trying to replace g/box

any views are more than welcome as i realy need the car on the road for school trips please help me!

thanks

nick

Well Midas,

I did'nt see what type engine/g-box you have but most RH shafts are held in by two bolts just behind the rear engine mount. If you look up from beneath the car you will see where the shaft passes through the lower/rear engine mount. If you feel around where the shaft passes through the mount you will feel the bolts/nuts. They are 11mm lock nuts.
If you have an air impact ratchet ul get them off in no time, manually is a pain as they are awkward to reach. You dont have to remove them completely as when the bolt starts spinning ul see why.
This housing holds the shaft carrier bearing so a gentle tap out towards the wheel when both bolts are out will do. Be careful not to damage the inner drive booth or pull the shaft from the wheel end as you will break the booth and have to replace it.

thank for getting back

RISKY not sure what type of engine im a layman but i know its a 1.9 td Wink

tippman what you discribe in your post sounds like what im looking at  and the two bolts you are talking about have been removed but i cant seem to free the d/shaft for some reason???  the bolts have been completey removed and i cant find anything else holding it in!
Am i right in thinking that where the bolts are located is referred two as the intermediate d/shaft?

For future reference a box spanner from a puncture repair kit works just fine on these two little bad boys Smile

Well Midas,

Id say the carrier bearing is seized if you have the bolts out, brut force and ignorance after that im afraid. Oh... and a good hammer! Once it starts to move it should come free. There is nothing else holding it. Just be careful not to damage the seal on the gearbox where the shaft enters. Also, be warned they usually leak after you put the shaft back in. They are inexpensive and when you have the box out it might be no harm replace them. Might save some hassle in the future!!
